TRAD

Trat is a small province at the eastern border of Thailand. The word "Trat" was believed to be currupted from "Krad", which is a kind of plants used for making broom. The province is hemmed in by fertile forested mountains, the Khao Banthat range serves as the natural boundary with Cambodia.

In Ayuthaya Period, Trat was named “Ban Bang Phra” or a "Thung Yai" which is a portal city of King Prasat Thong (1635). This province is the trading center of Southeast Asia, crowded of Chinese merchants. Eastern forest products and spices are exported by cargo liners through estuary of Trat's Khao Sa-Ming River and sold overseas.

This province was invaded by French for many times. In late 18th century, King Rama V had to give them Trat, its islands and Dan Sai (at Mekhong River). He was able to trade the area back by giving Phra Tabong, Siammarat, Si Sophon and Panjanta Khirikhet (koh Kong) in 23 March 1906. The day became an annual Trat memorial day of Trat city.

French came invade again in 1941 (Indochina War) at Koh Chang, but Thai navy succesfully protected the land. 17 January of each year is a memorial day for that glory.

In the sea, there are more than 50 islands and islets with delightful natural sceneries. The best known one is Ko Chang Marine National Park which is dominated by Thailand's second largest island.
