YASOTHON

Yasothon is a smallest province in the south of Northeastern region which is a location of famous Rocket Festival. It is located on a plateau of sandy soil, bordering to Phu Phan Mountain in the north.

In the rain season, the area is great for planting rice, jute, topioca and kitchen garden vegetables. It is dry in the summer and very cool in the cool season. There are less forests. The west and the east is a plateau and cattle range. The south is a basin of ten-kilometered Chi River, nice for being rice field.

The story of dynasties recored that the place was called " Dong Phi Singha" (The Lion Jungle) in the 17th A.D. Worawongsa, the governer from Vientiane, and his people settled down here in 1797 and named it "Sing Tha".

It became a big village in early 18 th and was named "Yasothon" in 1814 by King Rama II. Later, it became a part of Ubon Ratchathani. Until in 1972, it was created a separate administrative entity and upgraded to be a province.
