UBON RATCHATHANI

Ubon Ratchathani is a big province in Northeastern region of Thailand. It was a well established community for hundreds of year. The province is renowed for its strong Buddhist tradition, particularly practice of the forest-dwelling monks and the ancient Buddhist temples which can still be seen throughout the province nowadays.

It is geograhically a fertile flat land. The middle area of land is divided by Mun River. The east is a plateau and mountains. There are sandy-soiled cliffs on the mountains at the Mekhong Riverside, bordering Thai -Laos.

Before Rattanakosin period, this area was settled by Kha and Suai tribe habitants. King Rama I centralized refugees and founded a town, led by Tao Kham Phong. They has later moved the town to "Dong U Phueng" area, which is the current place.

In the reign of king Rama V, Ubon Ratchathani was a part of Lao Kao provincial city in the northeast and it was changed to be a Northeastern precint. The economy was down in 1925, this province became a part of Nakhon Ratchasima until it was established to be a province in 1933.

The province is unique in its folk culture which finds expression in the indigenous cuisine, handicrafts, such as silk and cotton products, basketry, and bronze-ware, and traditional events such as the Candle festival. There are natural beauties and historical sites including the 4,000 years old rock formation, prehistoric rock paintings, national parks, waterfalls, and the two-colored river, etc.
