SURIN

Surin is bordering to Cambodia. Now it is very well known for its annual Elephant Show, which usually takes place in the third week of November and attracts visitors from all over the world.

There is not any evidences to tell how the city was created. Historians, archeologists and old villagers believe that the town was builted 2,000 years ago, when Khom still has power on the area. After the Khom power had been detoriorated, the area became deserted.

In 1763, Luang Surin Phakdi (Chiang Phum) who was a governer of Ti village had recieved the permission from the king to move "Muang Thi" village to Surin. He moved it to Khu Prathai area, which is a place is good for agriculture and living. The area also has 2 canals protecting from invaders. Later, the village was upgraded to be "Prathai Saman" city and he was a governer of the town. King Rama I renamed it to " Muang Surin" in 1786.

The most famous attractions are the large elephant center which provides more than one hundred elephants participate in spectacular shows and many stone castles.
