SAKON NAKHON

Sakhon Nakhon is a three thousand years old Buddhist town, the location of 5 shrines of Buddhist rilics. The province was formerly named "Nong Han", was built in the 16th Buddhist Century when Khom Empire still has the power on the area.

After the Khom power has faded, Nong Han was ruled by Lan Chang Kingdom and was renamed "Chiang Mai Nong Han". It can be assumed that Nong Han has a long relationship with Vientiane. The power of Rattanakosin Dynasty from Bangkok can be seen in 1778.

The province is called "Sakon Twa Pi" in the reign of King Rama III, who finally renamed it to "Sakon Nakhon". The province is a location of interesting attractions such as Phrathat Choeng Chum (buddha relic shrine), Phra Tamnak Phuphan (royal palace), Nong Han (lake), Prasat Phueng, etc.
