KALASIN

Kalasin is a city of culture on the fertile Northeastern Plateau. There are evidences of Lawa, ancient tribe who settled here 1,600 years ago.

The city was builted in 1793 of Rattanakosin Period by Thao Sompamitr and his villagers, who immigrated here from the left of Mekhong River. They firstly settled down at the bank of Pao River and built the first town named "Ban Kaeng Samrong". Later, the town's name was changed by King Rama I. The city was firstly ruled by Phraya Chai Sunthorn (Thao Sompamitr). "Kalasin" is meaning to "The Black Water".

North of the province is plenty of hills and mountains, the famous one is the Phu Phan Mountain. The central area is covered with a variety of mountians and green forests. Interesting attractions here are Phu Phan Mountain, Lumpao River, Dinosaur fossils and foot prints, and so on.
