NAKHON PATHOM

Nakhon Pathom is one of the oldest city of Thailand. It is one of 5 perimeter cities of Bangkok, others are Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani, Samut Sakhon, and Nonthaburi. It has a nice and fertile basin and highland area without mountain. Some area is facing the sea. Amphoe Nakhon Chai Si, Amphoe Sam Phran, Amphoe Bang Saen are nice basins of agriculture beside the Tha Chine River.

This province was a civilized and prosperous town in Dvaravati period. Historians believe that this area was the first where Buddhism was propagated from India, thousands years ago. This is why many nationalities had moved in. The town was firstly builted at Phra Pathom Chedi area. But the river line changed and the area became dry.

So, people builted the new town named “ Nakhon Chaisi” or “Sirichai” and they abandoned the old town. When king Rama V went into priesthood, he visited and found the grandeur pagoda, “Phra Pathom Jedi”, at the old town here . He ordered the construction of Langa-styled pagoda to cover the old one and reconstructed of the town. The "Chedi Buja" canal and the southern rail train was built for transportation and people were moved to the old location.

The construction of Sanam Chan palace, many roads, and "Charoen Sattha" bridge was constructed by King Rama VI. He changed the town's name from “Nakhon Chaisi” to "Nakhon Pathom". Famous attractions are Phra Phrathom Chedi, the tallest pagoda of the world, crocodile farm, elephant show, rose garden, etc.
