NAKHON NAYOK

Nakhon Nayok was a city of Dvaravati, where many ranges of old Dvaravati city walls and moats are found. It was also the eastern gateway of Ayuthaya Kingdom, in the reign of King U-thong.

This city was also called "Ban Na" (Village of rice fileds). It is told that the area used to be a high ground. It was not good for planting and temming of malaria in Ayuthaya period. So, the king canceled the rice cropping tax to persuade villagers to settle here. After that, the place was crowded and became a big city later.

That is why people called the area as "Na Yok" (the special tax-exempted field). The place became a part of Prachin Buri in 1894 and later it was established as a province that has many natural attractions, mountains and waterfalls. The famous Khao Yai mountain is can also be reached from here.
