CHUMPHON

Chumphon is a gateway to the South, located as a port city on the Gulf of Thailand. The city has a symbol that is a picture of goat. The province was builted as a zodiac-satelited town of Nakhon Si Thammarat, in 555.

It becames a part of Ayuthaya Kingdom, in 1454. Later, King Rama V established it as a province. The eastern coastline, facing the gulf, is long 222 kms. There are basin areas that are plenty of forests, fruit plantations and rice fields in the east and the south of the province.

The name "Chumphon" assumably comes from the word "Chum Num Pon", meaning to the place of troops concentration where the ritual to bring spirit to all soldiers is held, or may comes from the name of local plant "Ma Duea Chum Phon" which is also a symbol of the city.
