RAYONG
 
Rayong is situated on the Eastern seaboard, having its 100 kms. long coast bordering to the Gulf of Thailand. The province is well-known for its fine beaches that offering interesting sightseeing and pleasure. This famous tourism spot is a fertile food and fruits resource and also important as a industrial area.
 
The story of Rayong was recored in the year 1570 of Ayuthaya period. It can be assumed that the town was builted since 957. In that time, Khmer has strong infuence in this land (which was formerly called Suwannaphum land). The important evidence of Khom art is a Khu Khai laterite lefting in Amphoe Ban Khai.

When Ayuthaya Kingdom was the second time defeated by Burmese in 1766 (the reign of King Ekathat), Phraya Tak and his followers broke through the Burmese encirclement and stop at Rayong before escaping to Chantaburi. Phraya Tak used 7 months to completely bring back the freedom to Thailand in 1768.

Rayong has many fine beaches. The best known tourist spots are Ban Phe fishing village, Samet island, Mae Ram Phueng beach, Kon Ao beach, etc.


The Samed island, which is also called "Koh Kaeo Pitsadan", was used as a scene in the famous ancient Thai literature, "Phra Aphai Manee", by Sunthorn Phu. The story is about a man, talented in playing pipe, who fell in love with a mermaid. But he was loved by a sea butterfly giant.
