LOP BURI

Lopburi is an ancient city of Dvaravati Kingdom (11-16 th A.D.) which once was ruled of Mon and Khom Kingdom. It was probably founded in pre-historical period until the Khemers who expanded their power to the town of Larvo dating from the 10th century and ruled over the area.

In the middle of the 13th century when the Thais who had already migrated from the North and had settled down in this country. The city wall was builted in 1893 by King U-thong of Ayuthaya Period.

After the invasion by Hollanders who previously commerce with Siam, Lopburi was reconstructed by King Narai Maharat (1656 - 1688) and was estabished as the second capital of Ayuthaya in 1664 with the help of French architects. The construction of the palaces and fortifications was supported by French and Italian.

At that time, foreigners from many countries came to meet the king Narai, who usually lived in his palace here. Therefore , the architectural style of Lop Buri in the reign of King Narai was half Thai and half western. In 1869, Lopburi was reconstructed again by King Rama IV. He had builted Phra Narai Ratchaniwet. After Siam's politic was changed into democracy, Lopburi was reconstructed to be a large modern garrison town.

Attractions in Lopburi are Khmer and Hindu ruins. Major ruins include the Khmer Phra Prang Sam Yot, the Hindu San Phra Kan, and Wat Phra Si Mahathat. Ramratchaniwet Palace is another interesting travel spot, built by Ayutthaya's King Narai during the 1600s as a summer retreat.
