CHAI NAT

Chainat was an important political city, established during Ayuthaya period. It is a location of many interesting attractions such as Chao Phraya dam, a large open bird cage.

The town was established by King Phaya Ler Thai, in Sukhothai period. The old site was called "Phraek" or "Sawan", located on the right side of Chao Phraya River. It used to be a frontier of both Sukhothai and Ayuthaya Kingdoms.

The town was used as a base to confront the Burmese army for several times and it usually brought the victory to Siam. That is the origin of the name "Chainat", meaning to 'The Place of Victory'. Later, King Bhoromracha II of Ayuthaya Kingdom moved the city across the river to current area.
