TAK

Tak is the second biggest province of the North, just smaller than Chiang Mai, which is an important communication center. Most of the area are mountains, forests, with villages of many hill tribes. This is the place of Loi Krathong Sai, elegantly beautiful festival that is held at the Ping River.

Tak is the site of Bhumibol Dam, the largest in Thailand, and many national parks and waterfalls. There is an Asian Highway passing through Myanma-Thai border into Thailand at Amphoe Mae Sot, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok towards Northeastern Thailand entering Laos at Chong Mek pass of Ubon Ratchathani.

In the past, Tak was a village of Mon people so there are some Mon arts appearing in the province. The center of the town was firstly located at Ban Tak, which was builted in the period of Sukhothai Kingdom. Tak played an important role as a western borderland in that time. Later, King Rama II had ordered to move it to the left of Ping River.
