PHRAE

Phrae is a northern province in a valley, surrounded by many mountains. The area has the Yom River running through. Historians believe that this is the place where "Li Lit Phra Lo", the well-known Thai literature, was created. It is the site of Muang Song as mentioned in the literature.

From messages in the stone inscription of King Ramkhamhaeng, it can be assumed that Phrae (wrote as "Phlae", in the inscription) was a town of Sukhothai Kingdom. The town was builted since the 12th Buddhist century, after Chiangmai was established as a capital. When Khmer has influence in this Lanna area, they had renamed it as "Wiang Kosai" which means silk fabric. Later, the name was changed into Phrae as present.

This town has famous attractions of Cho Hae Buddha's relic shrine and Phae Muang Phi, the strange landscape site.
