CHACHOENGSAO

Chachoengsao is an ancient Khmer word, meaning to deep canal. This province is located on the bank of Bang Pakong River, north of Bangkok.

The province's symbol is a temple that houses the Buddha Sothorn, the most revered Buddha image. It is commonly called "Paet Riu" by villagers.

Chachoengsao is located in a low basin of Bang Pakong River, which flows upstream from the mouth for 24 kms. The name "Pad Riu" is originated from an old story told by people at riverside.

It is telling that once this area was plenty of snakehead fishes which each of them can be sliced into big 8 stripes. This province is suitable for cultivation, especially rice, and being important economical cropping area.

The story of the town appears again in Ayuthaya period. Around the year 1549, King Maha Chakkraphat ruled this town for armed force recruitment purposes.

During the reign of King Maha Thammaracha, Thailand was in a weak situation due to being defeated by the Burmese. Phraya Lawaek (Khmer king) saw that it was good opportunity to locate Thai people to be his work force.

He, then, led his army by land and water transportation to forcefully take away a huge number of people from Chanthaburi, Rayong, Chachoengsao, and Nakhon Nayok.
