SAMUT SAKHON

Samut Sakhon which people usually call it as "Maha Chai" is one of 5 perimeter cities of Bangkok, others are Samut Prakan, Nakhon Pathom, Pathum Thani, and Nonthaburi. The area is a fertile basin, where most people are agriculturists and fishermen. It is plenty of marine creatures. Now, there are more than thousand modern ships working here and there are many salt production sites.

In the old days, the district is called "Tha Chin", due to its dealing with a vast number of Chinese junks. In 1548, King Maha Chakkraphat used this district town to recruiting troops from nearby seaside towns. He upgraded it to be the Sakhon Buri city.

In 1704, King Sua made a visit by a royal barge through Khok Kham Canal, which is very curvy. Phanthai Norasing, the coxswain, could not operate the proper steering thus causing damage to the prow due to hitting the limb of a tree. To forster the steadiness of the palace law, Phanthai Norasing begged the king to slaughter him.

Then, King Sua commanded to have a new canal be dug to eliminate the sharp curves of Khok Kham Canal. The mouth of the new canal meets the Tha Chin River in front of Mahachai Town.

The new canal was completed in the reign of King Thaisa and it was named "Mahachai" thus causing the people to call this town "Muang Maha Chai" later. Until the reign of King Rama IV, the city name was changed to Samut Sakhon. But some people still called it Mahachai.

This province is the top fishing site, noted for seafood and many kinds of agridultural products.
